In 2010, there was a devastating earthquake in Haiti. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 220,000 to 316,000; leaving thousands of orphans with no home, no parents, no food, and no water on every block of the streets in Lubin.
Too many times we see a natural disaster on the news, we remorse and feel for those who lost, but then we go back to our normal lives after a while and forget about the pain. The children in Lubin are not as fortunate. They didn’t watch the earthquake happen on the news. They experienced it first hand, and cannot forget the pain.
Sadly, not much has changed since the earthquake.
Soccer Sidekick Makes Moves
Every year, our founder, Ryan Maina, organizes a trip to the village of Lubin in efforts to make an impact. This year we pledged to donate 10% of our sales in February to helping the orphans of Lubin. We purchased soccer equipment and food for tons of kids in need.
“It is hard to articulate the magnitude of the poverty in Lubin,” Ryan stated… “I can’t even put it into words; Everywhere you look, you can still see the effects of the earthquake.
Soccer is a magical game that brings communities together. Teachers during school hours are stoned faced, but once the bell rings, the inner child comes out and the entire community floods the soccer field. Soccer can connect people across generations. It is a way of escaping the horrific cards the children were felt in this so called game of life. The community tends to forget all the hardships and rally behind each other, as they forget all their problems.
“It is amazing that something so small, yet brilliant, as a soccer ball is able to bring out smiles, laughter, and joy for these children. I can’t talk about it without getting emotional. These kids play soccer 8 hours a day, because it is the only thing they have left to hold on to” - Ryan
It is their release and freedom to escape from the horrendous situation they live in.
More Than Just A Game
Soccer Sidekick also provided enough food to feed children for months.
“Most kids go the entire day at school without eating. We were able to change that. The most important things are education and a meal” - Ryan
Ryan’s philanthropic trip also included some teaching. Our primary goal is to give these kids the tools and resources necessary to succeed. We empower these children to dream big and go for everything.
Ryan focused on inspiring the orphans of Lubin to reach for the stars. No matter what your goals are, you can reach them. Ryan even took a page out of Adidas’ textbook…. “Impossible is nothing”
Soccer Sidekick Team: Thank you
None of this would have been possible without the support of the Soccer Sidekick community. We cannot say thank you enough for supporting us in our efforts to help those in need, and we are grateful for your contributions.
We know that it is just a small impact, but is just that, an impact; and you helped us make that happen.
